"Bedbugs are turning up in hospitals, schools, movie theaters, health clubs.
Recent reports put them in a New Jersey college dorm and a Los Angeles hotel
. where one guest filed a $5 million lawsuit. Apartment tenants have taken
landlords to court over infestations." - AP, Jan.

All you have to do to get bed bugs in your home is to pick up a few while you
are visiting a place that has them. Or have someone in your home who has
them on their clothing. Bed bugs are small and flat, which allows them to
hide in almost any seam or crease, and hitchhike, unseen, to your house.
They can hide in clothing, furniture, luggage, almost anywhere. It only
takes a few transferred from one place to another to really get them going.
Because of their small size, bed bugs are notoriously difficult to detect,
until they are already out of control. And once they start, they are
frustatingly hard to eradicate.
All About Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are parasites. They rely on other creatures to feed themselves.
More specifically, bed bugs feed solely on blood, and, for the most common
strain of bed bugs, human blood. Even more specifically, your blood. Bed
bugs feed from the host, mostly at night, by piercing the skin with a sharp
"beak" and drinking until full. Often the host is completely unaware he or
she has been bitten.
However, for most people, bites are often the first sign of an infestation. On
many people, the bed bug bite will appear as a small welt, similar to a
mosquito bite - except "the adult bed bug actually takes quite a large
blood meal in the order of 10 times that of a mosquito.", according to
entemologist Stephen Doggett - Sydney Morning Herald, April 4, 2005. In fact, bed bugs bites are often mistaken for mosquito
bites. The welts, for many people can be very irritable and itchy.
However, not all biting parasites are bed bugs. The second, and more
reliable sign of bed bug infestation is small red or brown spots on
mattresses, bed springs, or clothing. These small spots are the parasites'
excrement, and are a more reliable indication of their presence.
Once an infestation starts, it only gets worse, because they multiply fast;
each female lays up to 500 eggs in her lifetime. Not only do they reproduce
quickly, bed bugs can live up a year without food so removing their food
source (you) temporarily does little to get rid of them.
|
"'One worrying aspect is an increase in the number of people's homes
(infested). It's now spreading right through the community,' Mr Doggett, who
says he recently found 5000 bed bugs in one woman's bed, said" - Sydney
Morning Herald, April 4, 2005

If you are going to tackle a bed bug infestation, you should be aware that
they can hide in almost any nook or cranny. Usually, you must treat along
walls, carpets, and borders such as wall paper. Carpet should be steam
cleaned to get the bugs where insecticides cannot reach. All furniture must
have the drawers drawers removed, and every nook and cranny treated and
inspected carefully. Clothing, bedding, and all cloth material should be
laundered in hot water. If you have bed bugs, anywhere and everywhere you
can imagine a bed bug being, there is most likely one there.
Bed Bug Infestations up Fifty Fold
Have you ever actually seen a bed bug? In the U.S., most people under a
certain age have never seen a real, live bed bug. Thanks to strong
insecticides such as DDT, bed bugs were largely eradicated in the U.S.
However, DDT has since been outlawed, and the pests are coming back. The
rapid growth of international travel and a generally more mobile population,
more and more people are getting their unfortunate chance to meet these tiny
biting creatures.

There HAS been an increase in bedbug infestations. Our member pest control
companies who received 1 or 2 bedbug calls a year are now reporting 1 to 2
each week. That's 50 times more calls. - National Pest Assocation
Management. Pestworld.org |
Due to their return, bed bugs have been in the news quite a bit lately. The
National Pest Management Association reported that bed bug cases have
increased fifty times - that is 500 percent in the last few years, and local health departments
and exterminators are reporting similarly drastic increases as well. One well-known
upscale hotel recently reached a large settlement with two customers who
were bitten by bed bugs while staying in one of their rooms, while another
was forced to settle a similar case with a travelling businessman.
Furtermore, the problem may be far worse than the industry is
admitting
Bed bugs have gotten so bad in one country, Australia, that they are
posing an immediate economic threat to their hospitality industry. On Feb. 7, 2006, Australian
representatives from hotel, motel and backpacker hostel associations, and
caravan and charter boat industries met to discuss strategies for dealing
with the infestation, which has gotten so bad that it is costing their
industry nearly $100 million per year. - The Sunday Mail, - "Hotel Summit Bid
to Bite Bed Bugs", Feb. 06, 2006.
However, the outbreak is not confined to Australia or any other single
country. Thanks to increased international travel, bed bugs are in nearly
every country in the world. A recent survey by a well-known pest control
company in 2004 found them in 43 different U.S. states. Bed bugs have been confirmed in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Texas, South
Carolina, Oregon, Colorado, and Indiana within the last three months. Some infestations have even forced
temporary closures of apartment complexes and hotels.
